Pręgierz - osioł dla żołnierzy toruńskich w dzisiejszej formie jest nawiązaniem do historycznego pręgierza, który stał u zbiegu ul. Żeglarskiej i Szerokiej przy odwachu.

Figura osła nawiązuje do stosowanych w dawnym Toruniu kar za drobne i cięższe przewinienia, wymierzanych tutaj - w pobliżu odwachu - dla żołnierzy toruńskich sił zbrojnych. Od XV do XIX w. w miejscu obecnego pomnika Mikołaja Kopernika stał tradycyjny pręgierz w formie słupa, przy którym wykonywano kary hańbiące dla skazanych: chłostano i obcinano członki.

Natomiast w XVII-XVIII w. przed budynkiem odwachu od strony ul. Żeglarskiej stał drewniany osioł z wyostrzonym grzbietem pokrytym blachą. Sadzano na nim krnąbrnych żołnierzy toruńskich (Toruń miał prawo posiadania zawodowej armii miejskiej), którym dodatkowo przywiązywano do nóg ciężarki ołowiane, zwiększając dolegliwość kary. Pokuta była podwójna: skazany był narażony na pośmiewisko gawiedzi, a ostry grzbiet pręgierza wbijał mu się w siedzenie.
Oryginalny osioł stał w tym miejscu do 1797 r.
