Miejsce urodzenia Samuela Bogumiła Lindego

Samuel Bogumił Linde urodził się w nieistniejącej dziś kamienicy przy ul. Małe Garbary 2 na Nowym Mieście. Dziś w tym miejscu stoi XIX-wieczny budynek, na którym umieszczono tablicę pamiątkową jemu poświęconą.
Linde ma także swój pomnik stojący od 1976 roku przed gmachem Książnicy Kopernikańskiej przy ul. Słowackiego.

Linde był wybitnym polskim leksykografem i językoznawcą. Jego największe dzieło - 6-tomowy Słownik Języka Polskiego, stał się niezwykle ważnym i pionierskim osiągnięciem naukowym, rewolucyjnym wtedy, odpowiadającym na nowe prądy oświeceniowe.
Słownik stanowi największy przełom w całych dziejach polskiej leksykografii. Jest pierwszym słownikiem opartym niemal wyłącznie na materiale wyrazowym drukowanych tekstów literackich, publicystycznych, naukowych itp. Jednocześnie jest pierwszym polskim słownikiem historycznym, bo opiera się na źródłach drukowanych aż od poł. XVI w.
Linde był pochodzącym z Torunia przedstawicielem warstwy intelektualnej, związanej z kulturą protestancką, niemieckojęzyczną. Wywodził się z miasta, które od samego pocz. XVIII w. stało się istotnym krzewicielem myśli wczesnooświeceniowej w całej Rzeczypospolitej. W 2. poł. XVIII w. (czyli okresie młodości Lindego) tendencje oświeceniowe w środowisku intelektualnym protestanckiego Torunia rozkwitły, ukazywały się niezwykle licznie czasopisma realizujące ideę "wieku świateł", działali profesorowie Gimnazjum Akademickiego, którego Linde był zresztą absolwentem.
