Toruńskie muzea i ich kolekcje związane są przede wszystkim z dziejami miasta i pierwszorzędnie dokumentują i obrazują jego historię i sztukę artystyczną, poprzez liczne, wysoko cenione eksponaty.

Wprawdzie nie wszystkie elementy bogatego dziedzictwa Torunia mają poświęcone sobie muzea czy ekspozycje, a wiele z - wydawać by się mogło sztandarowych - obiektów nie jest udostępnionych do zwiedzania.

Ratusz Staromiejski, Dom Kopernika i Świat Toruńskiego Piernika są najbardziej znanymi i najpopularniejszymi muzeami w Toruniu.

To od tych właśnie obiektów, a zwłaszcza od obejrzenia programu "światło-dźwięk" przy makiecie średniowiecznego Torunia w Domu Kopernika, należy rozpocząć poznawanie historii i sztuki dawnego wielkiego Torunia.

Zwiedzenie wszystkich muzeów zajęłoby kilka dni.

Zdecydowana większość muzeów jest nieczynna w poniedziałki. Poza sezonem turystycznym są czynne zwykle od godz. 10 do 16. Godziny otwarcia zmieniają się w sezonie turystycznym. Wtedy niektóre z muzeów w różne dni tygodnia pracują nawet do godz. 19. Przed wyruszeniem na zwiedzanie radzimy dobrze upewnić się, czy muzeum jest otwarte.

Najbogatsze zbiory wysokiej klasy dawnej sztuki toruńskiej, a także niezwykłe dzieła pomorskie, polskie i światowe znajdują się pod opieką Muzeum Okręgowego (jednego z największych muzeów w Polsce północnej), którego wystawy umieszczono w kilku obiektach - oddziałach. Największe ekspozycje znajdują się w Ratuszu Staromiejskim, w którym aż na 9 wystawach podziwiać można przede wszystkim cenne i bogate zbiory dot. dziedzictwa Torunia. Spośród najcenniejszych zobaczyć tu można np. unikatową średniowieczną Salę Sądową, niezwykle cenny zespół gotyckich witraży toruńskich, gotycką rzeźbę sakralną, zbiór renesansowych portretów patrycjatu toruńskiego, najstarszy w kraju poczet królów polskich, malowany za życia poszczególnych władców, bogatą kolekcję toruńskich mebli intarsjowanych, unikatowy Skarb ze Skrwilna i inne wyroby złotników, a także galerię malarstwa polskiego od poł. XVIII w., na którą składają się m.in. dzieła Bacciarellego, Smuglewicza, Gersona, braci Gierymskich, Witkiewicza, Malczewskiego, Matejki oraz mnóstwo innych.
W dwóch średniowiecznych kamienicach hanzeatyckich mieści się Muzeum Dom Kopernika, w przepięknej Kamienicy Pod Gwiazdą podziwiać można nie tylko wspaniałe wyposażenie typowej toruńskiej kamienicy patrycjuszowskiej, ale też zbiory sztuki Dalekiego Wschodu z najstarszymi zabytkami sztuki chińskiej z czasów dynastii Han.
Ciekawymi obiektami są też np. Muzeum Podróżników im. Tony Halika, Muzeum Etnograficzne, Muzeum Uniwersyteckie, Fort IV Twierdzy Toruń, Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej i in.
