Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika

Pomnik odsłonięto w 1853 roku, jednak historia jego sięga dalej. Oto w 1809 roku do Torunia z obleganej przez Austriaków Warszawy przeniosła się Rada Stanu Księstwa Warszawskiego. To właśnie stojący na jej czele Stanisław Staszic był inicjatorem wystawienia pomnika i pod jego budowę dokonał wmurowania kamienia węgielnego. Niestety zmiana sytuacji politycznej, powrót Torunia pod panowanie pruskie w 1815 r., odsunęły w czasie odsłonięcie. Ponowną inicjatywę, doprowadzoną do końca, wysunęło po latach niemieckie towarzystwo budowy pomnika, Coppernicus-Verein für Wissenschaft und Kunst.

Pomnik z 1853 roku wg projektu Friedricha Christiana Tiecka (1776-1851), dyrektora Oddziału Rzeźby Galerii Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Berlinie. Jeden z najwcześniejszych pomników Kopernika w Polsce i na świecie.
Chociaż stoi dopiero od 160 lat, to jednak wydaje się, jakby od zawsze wtopiony był w pejzaż Torunia. W każdym razie nie można sobie wyobrazić Torunia bez pomnika Kopernika. Dziś jest on także ulubionym miejscem spotkań nie tylko mieszkańców, ale i turystów.
Brązowa statua astronoma o wys. 2,6 m stoi na wysokim granitowym cokole, na którym widnieje złotymi literami wypisany łaciński napis w tłumaczeniu: "Mikołaj Kopernik Toruńczyk, ruszył Ziemię, zatrzymał Słońce i Niebo". Kopernik przedstawiony w todze profesorskiej, w lewej ręce trzyma przyrząd astronomiczny, astrolabium.
Pod cokołem studzienka, gdzie z paszczy delfina bije woda. Zbudowano ją na pamiątkę, jakoby Kopernik założył pierwszy wodociąg w Toruniu. Tymczasem drewniane rury wodociągowe istniały tu znacznie wcześniej, bo już przed połową XIV wieku.
