Bardzo dużo najcenniejszych toruńskich historycznych i stylowych kamienic jest użytkowana przez różnego rodzaju instytucje. Toruń może poszczycić się największym w Polsce zespołem tak dobrze zachowanych kamienic mieszczańskich sięgających średniowiecza, głównie XIV i XV w. Jest tu kilkaset domów posiadających mniej lub bardziej widoczne cechy gotyckie. W Toruniu zachowało się najwięcej gotyckich malowideł ściennych we wnętrzach świeckich. Poza toruńskimi znanych jest kilka malowideł w kamienicach warszawskich, 2 w gdańskim Ratuszu Głównego Miasta oraz 1 malowidło na fasadzie kamienicy we Wrocławiu.
