Bardzo dużo najcenniejszych toruńskich historycznych i stylowych kamienic jest użytkowana przez różnego rodzaju instytucje. Toruń może poszczycić się największym w Polsce zespołem tak dobrze zachowanych kamienic mieszczańskich sięgających średniowiecza, głównie XIV i XV w. Jest tu kilkaset domów posiadających mniej lub bardziej widoczne cechy gotyckie.
