Ulica Szeroka to dziś najbardziej reprezentacyjna i najbardziej ruchliwa ulica toruńskiego Starego Miasta i całego Średniowiecznego Zespołu Miejskiego. Zawsze była jedną z najważniejszych ulic toruńskich, zabudowana kamienicami najzamożniejszych i najbardziej wpływowych rodów patrycjuszowskich: burmistrzów, rajców, kupców hanzeatyckich, złotników.

Dziś jest wyłączona z ruchu samochodowego i stanowi deptak łaczący Średniowieczne Stare Miasto i Nowe Miasto.

Jest popularnym miejscem spacerów mieszkańców Torunia i turystów z całego świata.

Przy pierzejach Szerokiej między ul. Szczytną a ul. W latach 1386-1590 nazywana była Grossengasse (Wielka). Prowadziła z centrum miasta (Rynku Staromiejskiego) do Bramy Wielkiej (Kotlarskiej) i do Nowego Miasta Toruń. Była częścią ważnego traktu na wschód: z Torunia przez Mazowsze na Wołyń.

Dziś wszystkie kamienice tej ulicy pochodzą z czasów hanzeatyckiej świetności Torunia, czyli z XIV wieku, jednak w XIX stuleciu niemal wszystkie z nich zostały destrukcyjnie przekształcone z patrycjuszowskich w czynszowe wielorodzinne, a partery w jednolite przestrzenie handlowe z dużymi witrynami; w czasie tego przekształcenia zniszczeniu uległy zabytkowe wnętrza i fasady (>>>). Jednak mimo tego w wielu kamienicach zachowały się ślady dawnej świetności w postaci np. malowideł ściennych stropowych sięgających średniowieczna, renesansu i baroku.
